BYU Cougars Defeat Dragons FC 2-1

The BYU Cougars came into Saturday night’s contest in Provo knowing that a victory over the Burlingame Dragons would give them sole possession of first place in the PDL’s Central Pacific Division. The Cougars would seize the opportunity as goals by Taylor Fankhouser and Josh Hunter would score goals that would be enough for the Cougars to hold off a late Burlingame charge to win 2-1

The Cougars struck first in the 12th minute when a slick offensive play led to a quality opportunity by Josh Hunter which was saved by Dragons goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski only to see the rebound hammered home by Taylor Fankhouser giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The Cougars would hold that lead at the half.

The Dragons came out fast in the second half with more possession as they looked to crack the Cougars defense. But, the game turned as BYU, on it’s first offensive chance of the second half, fired home what turned out to be the game winner in the 64th minute. Josh Hunter took the ball on the left wing after a nice ball put him through, cut it back and lashed a shot off of the far post, handing the Cougars the all-important lead.

The Dragons would continue to apply pressure and they finally began to break down the Cougars.  In the 83rd minute, forward Brian Wright saw himself in on goal, and slid the ball across to defender Brock Messenger who shot it into the open net, making it 2-1.  It was the New Zealander’s first goal of the season.

But it was too little to late for the Dragons as the Cougars saw the game out safely for the 2-1 victory. With the victory, BYU jumps Burlingame in the standings and takes possession of first place in the Central Pacific Division with seven points(2-1-1) after four games. Burlingame stays in second on six points (2-0-1) after 3 games played.

Up next for the Dragons is a trip to Las Vegas to take on the Las Vegas Mobsters twice over Memorial Day Weekend. The games are on Friday and Sunday nights. Both games kickoff at 7:30pm.
