Burlingame Dragons Sign Three Defenders for 2016 PDL Season
Matas, Guillen-Torres, Hernandez Add to Depth on Defense
The Burlingame Dragons are pleased to announce that the organization has signed Cal State-Stanislaus defender Luis Hernandez and Notre Dame de Namur defenders Tyler Matas and Jose Guillen-Torres for the 2016 Premier Development League season.
Both Matas and Guillen-Torres are coming off solid seasons with the Argonauts under Burlingame assistant coach B.J. Noble. Both defenders played in every game this season (18) for NDNU helping the team finish with a 11-6-1 record overall, 9-3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, good for 2nd place in 2015.
Matas, notched five assists this season while playing stellar at outside back for the Argos. The 5’9, 145 lb. Senior from Honolulu, HI started all but one of the 70 games he has played in over the last four seasons. For his play this season, Matas was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s 3rd Team NCAA Division II All-American. He was also named PacWest Conference Defender of the Year and named to the Division II CCA First Team All-West Region. He ends his career as one of the most decorated athletes in NDNU history.
Guillen-Torres also had a quality season as he scored four goals this season for NDNU from his outside back position. The 5’9, 160 lb. defender arrived at NDNU in 2012 and over the last three seasons, played in 55 games for the Argos. He was named in 2015 as a member of the Pac-West All Academic Team.
Hernandez played at Cal State-Stanislaus in 2015 for former Dragons head coach Dana Taylor. He had an outstanding season helping lead the Warriors to a 15-4-3 overall record, 8-3-1 in the CCAA. The attack-minded defender scored four times while contributing eight assists in 21 games in 2015. The 5’9, 165 lb. sophomore outside back has played in 38 games over his first two seasons scoring four goals and dishing out 10 assists.
