The Argonauts are coming off of a solid season in 2015 finishing with an overall record of 11-6-1, 9-3-1 in the PacWest Conference, good for a solo 3rd place in the standings. NDNU finished with six straight wins in the PacWest and went 9-1-1 in their last 11 games, which bodes well for the Argonauts built confidence as they look forward to next season.
The Argos were led this past season by Senior Jack Ewert, who scored nine goals and notched three assists for 21 points. Replacing his offensive production will be difficult, but Sophomore Esteban Berumen is going to be counted on heavily to build on a season where he scored six goals in conference play. Junior Matt DeQuiroz also contributed with 12 points this season, (three goals, three assists) and is one of the Argonauts creative engines in the midfield.
On defense, NDNU is counting heavily on a youth movement as many of the defenders that the Argonauts featured have graduated and moved on after the 2015 season. Redshirt Sophomore Robert Hines will be counted on to lead the defense moving forward. The defender featured in 17 games for the Argonauts this season and is the only returning defender with extensive playing experience.
In net, the Argos will count on redshirt Freshman Alex Clewis and two freshman Carter Bishop and Sergio Uribe. All three will compete for Coach B.J. Noble’s attention as he seeks to break in a new backstop this upcoming season.
There are recent ties between the two teams as two current Dragons players just completed their senior seasons for NDNU and will play against their alma mater this weekend. Defenders Tyler Matas and Alex Guillen-Torres have played prominent roles for the Dragons this preseason and are looking forward to lacing up the cleats and competing against their old teammates. Head Coach B.J. Noble was also just hired as a Dragons assistant and will match wits with Dragons Head Coach Eric Bucchere this weekend.
